In World of Warcraft can all spellcasters benefit from different spell bonus'?
More specifically, I have a priest engineer that made two "random enchant" head gears. One was a plus to nature damage and the other frozen damage. Can she benefit from those in any way?

You need holy or shadow. If you do not know, look at your spell details, and it tells you the type of damage they do. i.e 48 holy damage or 100 shadow dmg over 10 secs.

no, you’ll need (depending on whatever spec) shadow for it to increase your damage

Has the USA learned anything about Perimeter Security in the Past Decade?
Case #1: The USS Cole — a man in a small boat who has not been identified in any way approaches to within 10 yards of the USS Cole. He looks like he might be delivering vegetables. But actually his boat contains a bomb. Many US lives are lost.

Case #2 Ten years later a man approaches a CIA Camp in Afghanistan. He is unidentifed, but he is wearing the uniform of the Aghanistan Army. He’s allowed into the camp. Under his uniform he’s wearing an explosive vest. Many US lives are lost.

Now, you may be thinking, yes but why didn’t you tell the government about perimeter security right after the USS Cole incident. I did, as a consultant to NCIS, at the direction of the Secretary of the Navy, I did.

Since that time the methods available for very reliable biometric identification have gotten cheaper, simpler and faster. They rely on the veins in the hand, which are just as distinctive as the iris of the eye, or the structure of the face.

That CIA camp in Afghanistan only had a few dozen people who were authorized to be in the camp at all. Let’s say 100 people. Well, that data could be stored in .0000000001% of a chip, in a very small battery power machine. It’s not a budget buster for the US government to get that done. With such a machine, and a single gate, there would be no need to speculate about somebody’s identity based on their uniform. Any person gaining ingress into the camp would be positively identified. Total cost, amortized over say 10,000 hand scans, about 17 cents per scan.

Hillary’s got $100 Billion to drop on the enviros at Copenhagen, but we can’t find 17 cents to keep patriots and heros safe from harm. In 10 years we have learned nothing, nada, nihil, zip, zilch about perimeter security. We can’t keep bombers off our planes, crashers out of White House dinner parties. We are hapless, lame, feckless.

We accept this because we are not very political people. Most of us just don’t care. In a more mentally alert nation, like Switzerland for example, the kind of failures we routinely have would be corrected. Someone would take steps — fixes would be put in place. If I gave my perimeter security presentation to the Swiss, they would have done something about it. Caring is actually important to getting things done.

We have learned plenty from our failures. If you have ever been to a comabat zone, you will see the security. The problem with Afghanistan we are a largely international force there. That means you have soldiers from all over the world there providing security. US forces actually dont handle security alone on some of the biggest bases in Afghanistan. You also have smaller firebases that are joint US, Afghan, and ISAF. If you have a sympathizer there and let someone through the gate, it won’t make a difference how many biometric systems you have in place. Technology isnt always a fix for human error. How would a biometric system stop anyone from running a boat into a ship? Thats a human failure, not something a system can fix.

That FOB is not a CIA only base. It has soldiers there as well. The story now is that the attacker was let into the FOB because he was being turned into an informant by the CIA.

a culture of violence against women?
If women’s rights are anywhere near similar to men’s rights, why do fathers sell their pubescent daughters to men three times the child’s age? There can be no love in such a marriage, and one might argue that love can not exist at all when a man can go to another wife if his first wife displeases him.If women’s rights are similar to men’s rights, why is a son’s inheritance twice that of a daughter’s inheritance by religious law? The Koran states that, "God directs you as regards to you children: The male shall receive a portion equal to that of two females (Koran 4:11)." Is this to say that men and women have similar rights

King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)

IMDB rating: 5.50

Plot: Mr. Tako, the producer of a low rated television show called “Mysteries of the World”, decides his show needs some spicing up. So he sends two of his staff, Osamu Sakurai and Kinsaburo Furue, to Pharoh Island to bring back some berries, called soma, noted for their non-addictive narcotic effect. He also wants the two to bring back proof of a giant ape named King Kong. Before the pair leave, Osamu stops by his sister Fumiko’s apartment for dinner with her and her boyfriend, Kazuo Fujita. During his visit, Kazuo shows the two his new invention, a wire that is stronger than steel. In the meantime, a submarine collides with an iceberg releasing Godzilla, who was trapped there seven years earlier. When Osamu and Kinsaburo arrive at Pharoh, they not only find the berries but the giant ape. After a battle with a giant octopus, Kong drinks the juice that is made from the berries and falls asleep. While he is sleeping, the pair tie him to a raft and take him back to Japan. In the meantime, Godzilla is rampaging throughout the Japanese countryside. While in route to Japan, Kong breaks free and swims toward Japan and inevitably on a collision course with Godzilla.

TRUE OR FALSE: There were two different endings for the classic "Godzilla vs. King Kong"?
In an attempt to appease american audiences for the film, there was alternate endings to showcase both monsters

In the version sent to the US — King Kong won the fight

In the version that was seen in Japan - Godzilla was victorious

..

although the american version of Kingu Kongu tai Gojira (king kong vs godzilla) was heavily edited to add in a couple of american actors for the UN report footage, the ending scenes were the same. both monsters plunge into the ocean and only king kong emerged and swam away.

however, in the japanese version, the movie ended with two roars, one by king kong and followed by a roar by godzilla, which signified a draw.

whereas in the american version, godzilla’s roar was cut out giving the impression that godzilla had lost.

also note that godzilla all of the other japanese godzilla series displayed godzilla’s ability to survive underwater (we wouldnt know if it could breathe underwater as it was never clarified) as per in the first godzilla movie when the original godzilla was killed by a man made flesh eating chemcial in the sea.

thus, although there wasnt a different ending scene for both the US and japanese versions, the cutting of of godzilla’s roar gave the illusion that king kong won

and there would be no way godzilla would lose, its the king of monster! it had insane cell regenaration and emited extreme level of radiation. if anything, king kong would have been owned by the monster lizard and tried to run away but ended up with cancer due to the radiation.

Given that the planet orbiting the nearby star 51 Pegasi is about larger than the Earth…?
Given that the planet orbiting the nearby star 51 Pegasi is about larger than the Earth, but more massive, on that world you would weigh:

a)more that you do here.
b)half as much as you do here.
c)twice as much as you do here.
d)more than you do here.
e) the same as you do here

I’d say either d) or c)
I think gravity is a function of mass
so if it’s more massive, AND larger, I’d have to say I’d definitely weigh more, if not double.
Sebastian | Jan 24, 2010

F = Gm(1)m(2) / r^2.

F is the force of gravity between two objects: in this case it’s your weight.
G is the gravitational constant.
m(1) is your mass; m(2) is the mass of the planet.
r is the distance between you and the centre of mass of the planet.

Your weight is proportional to the mass of the planet and inversely proportional to the distance between you and the planet’s centre of mass (assume it’s the geometric centre). The more massive the planet and the closer you are to its core, the stronger the force and hence the higher your weight.

Was this question not quantified? Without numbers, these two effects work against each other and you can’t tell which, if either, dominates.

How did you get through the complete unabridged Moby Dick?
-

Did you have to read it, or did you like it, or was it tiresome or what? It is
time for me to read another adventure classic.

.

I did have to read it as a part of a uni course and only had a very short time to do it. Basically I used a speed read technique, that you skim through, pausing for what feel like important bits. This way it took me an afternoon of hard concentrated reading. I did enjoy parts of it very much but it does belong to the pre-cinema/pre-radio/pre-television era of writing where things were unhurried in pace both to write and to read, and so is harder for a modern reader to get through because of our "Now" culture.
I also learned a massive amount of "facts" about whales and whaling that are certainly now false!

Vivienne T | Jan 25, 2010

This is what I did:

I knew this girl that lived on my floor. She got pretty good grades, and she was attractive (sort of), and shy. I paid some attention to her, told her I liked her, and I got her to read me the book. (She also wrote my paper, but that’s another story - and I don’t recommend having someone do this for you - I did get an "A" though)

Anyway, I would read a little here and there, but mostly I just had her read it to me at night. When I got bored I would fool around a bit.

I’m a male model now, and I’m saying that because I’m extremely good looking so this plan will work for you if you’re hot. If you’re not, you may have to find some less attractive person to try this out on.
The Truth | Jan 22, 2010

Jerry H | Jan 22, 2010

i have read some charles dickens. i know it isnt quite the same but they were really long. i just kept pushing through. behind all the descriptions that were pages long and all the weird words that i didnt understand, i just kept pushing through. i fininshed a 800 page book in two weeks. so i guess my advice would be to keep going forward if you really wanted to read it. because when you look back on it it will make you happy that you finished such a long and famous classic. if you dont want to read it then i would suggest that you dont. reading a book you dont want to is frusterating and really hard to get into. i wanted to read those charles dickens and in the end i was very happy i did, but i have went back and tried to read another one and i couldnt do it.
bookworm21 | Jan 22, 2010

I couldn’t read it.
good luck.
summer bear | Jan 22, 2010

This was the only assigned reading in college that I did not complete. I found its pace glacial.

I read an abridged version, found a classic comic of it, pored over the Cliff Notes, saw the movie, and passed the course with a high B. Good enough.
akaMaryn | Jan 22, 2010

If you’re having a hard time getting into it, try this: Get the unabridged audiobook version, and read the book as you follow along with the tape. This will help you with that most difficult but all-important step of actually getting started on the book. If you’re anything like me, you’ll eventually find yourself getting into the story, and eventually your own reading speed will so outpace the tape that you’ll turn it off as a distraction. I find this also works well for reading Shakespeare.
